At that time, the town was renamed after Governor General Sir John Sherbrooke, when he retired and returned to England. The vast majority of the residents within the city of Sherbrooke speak French, despite the township's Anglophone name and heritage; there are hardly any traces of Sherbrooke's English past remaining.

On January 1, the year 2002, the city grew significantly by the merges of the cities of Sherbrooke, Deauville, Ascot, Lennoxville, Bromptonville, Saint-Elie-d'Orford, Rock Forrest and Fleuimont.
