It is the only Canadian Province to be bilingual with English and French languages being constitutionally recognized languages. During 2009, Canadian Statistics projected the provincial population to be 750,457, with the majority of inhabitants English speaking. There is a thirty three percent large Francophone minority in the region, mainly of Acadian origin.

The name "New Brunswick" came from the English and French partial transcription of the city of Brunswick or Braunschweig in German. This city of Brunswick is situated in modern day Lower Saxony in northern Germany and former duchy of the same name. This city is the ancestral home of the Hanoverian King George III from Great Britain.

New Brunswick's urban regions have a big service based economy focused on health care, educational, financial, retail and insurance sectors. These sectors are distributed equitably amongst the 3 major urban centres of the province. Also, port facilities and heavy industry are situated in Saint John. Fredericton City however is predominantly occupied with the government, military services and universities. The region neighboring Moncton City has the important rail facilities and air terminal, along with being popular as a commercial, retail, distribution and transportation hub.

The province's rural economy is based mainly on mixed farming, fishing, forestry and mining businesses. Forestry is an essential economy in all parts of the province but is most prominent in the heavily forested areas in the central part of the province of New Brunswick. There are many sawmills in the smaller towns. Big pulp and paper mills are located within the cities of Edmundston, Saint John, Miramichi and Nackawic.

The provincial mining businesses include heavy metals like for example lead and zinc. These minerals are mined around Bathurst City situated within the north. Sussex is home to one of the world's biggest potash deposits. A 2nd potash mine is in development within the Sussex region which is projected to be costing more than one billion dollars. Natural gas and oil deposits are also being developed and explored within the Sussex region as well.

The farming sector in New Brunswick is located largely in the upper Saint John River Valley. This region encompasses the northwest portion of the province of New Brunswick. The most valuable crop grown here is potatoes. There are also mixed and dairy farms that are situated elsewhere, particularly within the southeast region of the province, concentrated within the Kennebecasis and Petitcodiac river valleys. With regards to the fishing business, the most valuable catches consist of lobster, scallops and king crabs. An essential part of the local fishing trade is the farming of Atlantic salmon in the Passamaquoddy Bay area.

Saint John has a huge tourism based trade thanks to the various cruise ships which come through the area every year.
