It is a centre of aerospace, commerce, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, and global affairs and is the head office of the Montreal Exchange. It is a leader in design, culture and film. Tourism is an essential industry.

In the year 2010, 2thinknow ranked Montreal in the annual Innovation Cities Index at 34th place globally for innovation, ahead of Calgary, Quebec City, Edmonton and Vancouver. Toronto ranked 12th. The city of Montreal has even been called number one host city in North America by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
